Herdade do Portocarro is an 18ha estate in Portugal's Peninsula de Setubal, kept cooler than elsewhere in the country by its proximity to the Atlantic. Winemaker Jose da Mota Capitão has always done things his own way, from his biodynamic inspired farming to his planting of the Tuscan variety Sangiovese, and has forged a reputation as one of Portugal's finest winemakers in the process.
The wine has a wonderful balance of wild red fruit with firm tannins and bright acidity reminiscent of red cherries. These mingle with a little cocoa and toast from ageing in French oak and tobacco and spice notes from its maturity in bottle.
