Bodega Atamisque, named after a local shrub, are a quality-driven small producer in the heart of Mendoza's Tupungato sub-region. At 1300 metres elevation, their vines benefit from a combination of excellent sun exposure and cold nights giving perfect balance between ripeness and freshness. French winemaker Philippe Caraguel works the fruit with care into very classy wines, with will balanced oak not overpowering the natural character of the variety and region.
The Catalpa Chardonnay comes from a single plot of their best vineyard, fermented and aged in new French oak barrels. Abundant ripe fruit leads on the nose, pineapple, peach and golden apple, with supporting notes of vanilla and cinnamon buns from the oak. On the palate it is generous and creamy, with lovely refreshing acidity preventing it from becoming overly heavy or flabby. Try this with strong cheeses or seared scallops for a luxurious pairing.
