Aroa la Natural is an excellent value Spanish red, which happens to be a natural wine, and even says so on the label! Aroa is one of just a handful wineries in Spain, and the only one in Navarra, to have received the Wineries for Climate Protection certificate. Awarded by the Spanish Wine Federation, it recognizes continuous improvement on four fronts: reduction of emissions, water management, waste reduction and energy efficiency.
The vineyards are located on the northern border of Navarra, not that far away from Rioja. The vineyards are protected by the nearby Urbasa y Andia mountain ranges. The vines are farmed organically, with all the work done manually, no machines.
The dominant grape is Garnacha, a staple in many blended red Spanish wines. It is topped up with a field blend of many varieties in tiny quantities. The wine has a short maceration, and minimal intervention, with very low sulphur levels. This is all about preserving the fresh fruit flavours, and bottling early.
It's a delicious very moreish wine, full of bright, soft red fruits, with gentle tannins. This would be great with a paella, or just as easily enjoyed on its own. It's a natural wine which over delivers for the price, and is clean and well made.
