Lovely Merlot-dominant red from the widely under-appreciated (hence underpriced) Francs-Côtes de Bordeaux near St-Émilion. The fruit comes from 30-year-old vines grown on hillsides high above the Gironde river, and the blend is 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.
What's most impressive about this wine is the pedigree of the team behind it. Chateau de Francs is co-owned by Dominique Hebrard (formerly of Cheval Blanc) and Hubert de Bouard of Chateau Angelus. A very classy wine at this price point.
