A historic estate with an eye toward the future, Chateau Siran is a Cru Bourgeois in Margaux that is going from strength to strength. The Mailhe family have owned the Chateau since 1859, when they purchased it from the great-grandmother of the artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Since 2008 Edouard Mailhe, along with vineyard manager Jean-Luc Chevalier, has revolutionised the cultivation, adopting a more sustainable approach with minimal chemical inputs and experimenting with organic farming for certain plots.

Surrounded by famous classed growth Chateaux on the siliceous gravel banks of the Gironde, Siran benefits from the archetypal Medoc terroir, perfect for their balance of ripeness, structure and freshness.

From a vintage ranking alongside 2016 and 2009 as the best since 2000, this is fine claret epitomised. A blend of 46% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, aged for 12 months in fine-grained French oak, with 35% new barrels.

A young and powerful wine, with robust but ripe tannin and deliciously deep black fruits. There is the hint of florality typical of Margaux, alongside spicy, toasty oak. This has the potential to age very nicely indeed, and will benefit from decanting in its youth. Try with with roast beef to amplify the wow factor of this superstar vintage!
