This is a very special new project from renowned Beaujolais producer Chateau Thivin. Alongside their Gamay vines, they have devoted a single parcel to the hybrid varieties known as 'PiWis' (a convenient shortening of pilzwiderstandsfähige). These are crosses between European Vitis Vinifera and the more disease and cold-resistand American grape species (largely Riparia and Labrusca). The Geoffray family selected a terraced plot on the East slope of Mont Brouilly, rich in the blue ferromagnesian volcanic rock that sets this part of Beaujolais apart. The varieties chosen were Prior, Chambourcin, Pinotin and Souvignier Gris.
These vines have never been sprayed with any chemical, organic or otherwise. Their natural disease resistance means they can be managed through manual methods alone, benefiting the soil health and biodiversity of the vineyard.
The wine is made using similar methods to their Beaujolais wines - natural fermentation with whole bunches in oak vats for 7 days, before 9 months of barrel maturation.
Very deep red in colour, with a tinge of purple in the centre of the glass. Ripe, deep fruit notes of cassis and blackberry on the nose, with a hint of black pepper. Smooth and soft on the palate, with raspberry jam and meaty oak notes. A one-of-a-kind wine and experience!
