Thierry and Florence Poulleau run this 14ha estate in the Cote de Beaune, founded by Thierry's parents in the 1960s, with exquisite care. Weed removal is done by plowing rather than herbicide, they strip leaves manually to open up the canopy and green harvest to increase the concentration at the expense of yield.
The Poulleau's make this stunning wine from a tiny 0.17 hectare parcel of 80 year old vines in the 'Les Grands Champs' vineyard, bordering the Premier Cru 'En l'Ormeau.' The old vines give a stunning concentration and power, while retaining characteristic Volnay floral notes and elegance. Aged for one year in oak barrels, including one quarter new oak to add spice and structure.
A powerful scent of violet, dark cherry and anise opens up from the glass enticing you to take a sip. On the palate it has a perfect balance of rich, pure fruit with soft tannins and fine acidity. Black and red berries, subtle spices and undergrowth all come together to give this wonderful complexity. Savour on a special occasion with roast duck or goose.
