We have long been fans of the excellent wines of the Sao Miguel estate in Portugal's Alentejo region so are delighted to have scored a (very small) number of bottles of their top white wine! The name 'Esquecido' means 'forgotten' in Portuguese, referring to the accidental creation of the first vintage of this wine in 2017. A 400l barrel of Arinto, destined for the lovely Sao Miguel Branco, was forgotten in the cellar and was unknowingly aged for a year and a half. The result was so delicious that they have chosen a portion of their finest Arinto to age in oak and bottle alone as 'Esquecido' ever since!
Complex and savoury in the aroma, with woody and herbal notes, a suggestion of creaminess alongside dried fruits and honey. Despite being just 12% alcohol there is substantial weight and impact on the palate, layers of citrus fruits, buttered toast and stony mineral notes. The impressively long finish displays a broad and gentle acidity, making this an outstanding pairing for any fish or seafood, particularly with rich and creamy sauces.
