The oldest Port producer, in operation since 1638, Kopke are specialists in crafting the finest wood-aged Ports. From their vineyards at Quinta Sao Luiz on the steep slopes above the Douro to their aging cellars in Vila Nova da Gaia, every stage of Port production is done in-house to the highest standards of quality.
The aged Colheita Ports are Kopke's signature, the product of a single vintage aged in wooden casks for decades before bottling to produce a wine of unparalleled complexity and harmony. This example, which Kopke as a Portuguese winery note comes from the year of Cristiano Ronaldo's birth, spent a remarkable 38 years in barrel before bottling!
The long wood ageing has faded the colour to a pale tawny, with slight garnet hints in the centre of the glass - at this age it becomes difficult to tell red and white Ports apart! The aroma is deep and unmistakeably mature, with notes ranging from nutty (marzipan, hazelnut) to dried fruit (raisin, prune, candied peel, fig) and sweet-earthy (mocha, burnt toffee). These flavours and more layer on the palate, which while intensely sweet and full-bodied, retains a delicate dryness and cooling mineral sensation.
