For the past four years, brothers Mark and Bobby Wallace have embarked on a joint venture, crafting their own wine project. What initially began as an endeavour to create braai wines for themselves and friends has blossomed into a new label, driven by their quest to discover unique vineyard sites. The inaugural release under their Off the Record label is an Elgin Chenin Blanc, a rare gem given the scarcity of Chenin Blanc vineyards in the region. However, starting from the 2022 vintage, Bobby has taken the reins individually, expanding the range to include a high-altitude Syrah from the Ceres plateau.

This remarkable vintage showcases a small parcel of Chenin Blanc grapes sourced from the cool-climate region of Elgin, resulting in a production of only 2300 bottles. The wine undergoes barrel fermentation in French oak barrels, specifically 2nd, 3rd, and 4th fill, along with partial Malolactic fermentation.

With an enticing pale straw colour in the glass it is instantly welcoming. The nose leads with alluring citrus notes that gracefully unfold on the palate, accompanied by a luscious, creamy mouthfeel. A wide range of citrus, apple, and blossom flavours take centre stage, supported by an underlying minerality and subtle oak influence, which adds complexity to this Chenin Blanc. The journey culminates in a long and lingering finish, leaving a lasting impression.
