There is a brilliantly bizarre story behind the Ghost Block vineyard. It's basically a hilltop on the valley floor. Eight million years ago, the peak of Yountville Hill blew right off, came crashing down the valley and left a seam of Napa Tertiary Volcanics exposed.
This is the soil these organic Cabernet vines are planted on and producer Sara Beer has upheld Pilcrow's 'quiet wine' philosophy in the resulting wine. Winemaking is kept simple and honest, so the wine fully expresses the uniqueness of its terroir - the volcanic soils and the moderating cool breezes travelling up the warm valley floor.
This is an old-Napa wine and a symphony of deftness and restraint. The dark Cabernet fruit is complemented by rose petal and black tea notes. Everything is held in check by silky-smooth tannins and bright acidity.
