Dougos Winery was established in 1991 by Thanos and Louiza Dougos, with Thanos overseeing viticulture and Louiza handling winemaking. Together, they craft wines from both indigenous Greek grape varieties and international blends. They also manage one of Greece's oldest vine nurseries, founded in 1950. With a limited production of around 70,000 bottles annually, the winery is located in the Tempi Valley, at the foothills of Mt. Olympus, within the PDO Rapsani in the Thessaly region. The vineyards, planted in iron-rich schist soils at altitudes of 450-700 meters, benefit from these poor soils, which regulate water retention. Cultivated without irrigation, the low-yield vineyards are certified organic.
The Rapsani label is the winery’s flagship, and the 2022 vintage may be their best yet. This classic blend of Xinomavro, Krasato, and Stavroto is aged in French and American oak barrels for 12 months, followed by an additional year of bottle aging. The result is an elegant, fruity wine, more velvety than a typical Xinomavro. Rapsani Dougos pairs beautifully with any tomato-based dish, making it a versatile and enjoyable red wine.
