Owned and managed by Serena Palazzolo and her sons, Ronco del Gnemiz has been one of Friuli Venezia-Giulia’s leading wineries for more than a decade. Her management has pushed the winery to new heights due to their commitment to uncompromising quality through natural viticulture and maintaining low yields. Serena and her partner/fellow winemaker, Christian Patat, attribute the wines age-ability to their deep-rooted respect for the terroir, preservation and improvement.

This amazing 2019 vintage has a mix of roses, violets and a dusting of confectioner’s sugar on the nose, along with sweet herbs and wild strawberry, which creates a captivating display. It’s soft and textural yet also refined and pure, with red fruits and savory spices which give way to pretty inner florals. This leans further toward the savory side throughout the finale, as minerals and a sour twang of tart currants and cherry pits linger. The drinkability factor here is off the charts. The Schioppettino is the only red in the portfolio that has a small percentage of stems left intact during fermentation, which adds to its spicy herbal character. The wine is aged for 20 months in used oak. Medium-bodied, full of spicy red fruit and leather; best served with game or grilled red meats.
