Vieux Chateau Bayard is one of the oldest properties on Bordeaux's right bank (vieux is French for old) with its buildings dating back to the 14th century. It has been in the same family since 1804, uniquely passed down between women for the last 7 generations. Now at the head is Marie-Loure, joined by her husband Matthieu, both of them winemakers trained in different parts of France.

Their vines, predominantly Merlot, are planted in limestone on a south-southwest exposure giving good ripeness well balanced by acidity. They pick relatively early for the region, looking to preserve freshness rather than let the fruit develop too much alcohol or jamminess.

75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, with half of the wine aged in oak barrels and half in concrete. Ample and plump, with deliciously juicy black cherry and blackberry fruit notes and gentle tannic structure. Hints of sweet spices and red pepper add complexity and the finish is long and smooth. A very well-made claret that perfectly balances depth with drinkability, and would make a superb partner for a mushroom wellington or sausage casserole.
