Charles Frey Frankenstein Grand Cru Blend 2022

Domaine Charles Frey has been practicing of the organic and biodynamic viticulture since 1996, being a pioneer among the first winemakers to work that way. The family history goes back to the 18th century : first vintage was made in 1963, by Charles Frey, upon his return from the war. His son Dominique took over the estate in 1984, and today, the vineyard is run by 3rd generation Julien and Thiébaud. The vineyard extends on 14 hectares, on remarkable and various terroirs (sand, granite, clay, silt, mica), divided in distinct locations (Grands Crus, hamlets).

The 'Frankenstein' is a new conception, a wine that plays outside the rules of Alsace's AOC system to create a novel wine that truly encapsulates the terroir of the Frankstein Grand Cru vineyard. It is a field blend of four different varieties aged in earthenware vessels - it cannot bear the name of the Grand Cru because blends are not permitted, so they named it Frankenstein, referencing both the name of the site and the blending of different varieties that go into it.

Bold, complex and exotic, the nose presents layers of mango, pear and peach fruit, spicy ginger and vanilla and a hint of florals. The palate opens broad, with ripe and intense fruit notes and lots of sweet baking spices (nutmeg, cardamom) before powerful yet balanced acidity comes in to maintain the freshness. A stunning picture of this special granitic terroir. where no one variety dominates.
