Muscat Beaumes de Venise is one of the Rhone's most historic wines, served at the tables of the Popes at Avignon, and the Domaine des Bernardins keep this tradition alive. Formally a monastery, the estate was converted to a commercial vineyard in the early 1800s. Former owner Louis Castaud was the great champion of the region, helping the style achieve AOC status in 1945. Castaud's granddaughter Elisabeth Hall now runs the domaine along with her husband.
To make this wine, gently pressed Muscat Blanc a Petit Grains is fermented with wild yeast, monitored carefully under temperature control. When fermentation has reached the exact level of sugar they want for the finished wine, spirit is added to fortify the wine and stop fermentation. The ageing is done in stainless steel to preserve the expressive perfume of the Muscat.
The stunning nose balances rose petals, mandarin orange and honey aromas and the palate is sweet, rounded and silky. This makes an equally delicious pairing for fruity puddings or strong cheeses.

This was my second visit to Butlers Wine Cellar and on both occasions the service has been wonderful. The young lady assisted me and my wife on a number of purchases of wine and sherry and seemed very knowledgeable and made us feel welcome.
