Mama Afrika Pinot Noir 2019

The moniker Mama Afrika draws its inspiration from the majestic mountains encircling the Boland Region, specifically in Worcester within the Western Cape. Rooted in the producers upbringing in the Zwelethemba township, there exists a mountain with a formation resembling both an elephant and a human figure gazing skyward.

This mountain became "Mama Afrika," embodying unity, fervour, and optimism for the local community. For those who identified with it, this mountain stood as a beacon of strength and motivation for generations. The visionaries behind Mama Afrika were captivated by this symbol and believed it best encapsulated their foray into the realm of winemaking. Through crafting wines of excellence, their aim is to offer both local and global wine enthusiasts an experience to savour and cherish.

The high summer temperatures in South Africa might not seem ideal for high-quality Pinot Noir production. However, Mpelo and his team have crafted an exquisite example. The wine showcases natural fruit ripeness, avoiding the jamminess often found in warmer climates. Hand-picked from a small 3-hectare site with tightly controlled yields for concentration, the grapes undergo a long, slow fermentation to ensure careful yet maximum extraction for tannic structure and complex fruit flavours and aromas. The finished wine boasts a delicate oak spice richness paired with fresh strawberry, raspberry, and cherry kernel profiles, complemented by tart blackberry and a hint of mint and rosemary. Just bottled after three and a half years in barrel, tank, and bottle, this Pinot Noir is vibrant, juicy, and effortlessly classy.
