It’s been eventful. With the end of an up-and-down year in sight, we’ve got twice as much to celebrate this New Year’s Eve. Here are our top five bottles to crack open on 31st December.
1. Edouard Brun Magnum (£69.50)
Go big or go home. Magnums are the ultimate celebration bottle; no better party cork to pop as the bongs count down to midnight. This rich, powerful non-vintage sparkler is a Team Butler favourite that outperforms many famous vintage Champagnes, at a price you could easily pay for a smaller bottle.
2. Breaky Bottom Cuvée David Pearson 2015 (£32)
There is no better fizz being made in England today than the tiny releases lovingly put out each year by the inimitable Peter Hall at Breaky Bottom. This blend of the Champagne varieties is just coming into its own, with ripening fruit and autolytic pastry notes starting to round out the trademark pinging acidity.
3. Rocca Di Frassinello Beaubourg 2017 (£59.50)
How’s this for a pedigree? A Super Tuscan made in a joint venture between Castellare di Castellina, Barons de Rothschild and Chateau Lafite. The deep, brooding wine inside the bottle is every bit as exemplary as the names behind the label. Only 50 cases came into the UK and we got three. If you’re going glam for NYE, get in quick and grab a bottle.
4. Hacienda De Chihuahua Sotol Plata (£47.95)
The only chihuahua to be seen with this party season. It’s rare to see this stuff outside South America so if you like going off the beaten track, give this crisp tequila-style spirit a try.
5. Dog House Distillery Baller Vodka (£34.50)
Meet London’s only vodka made fully from scratch. The wheat comes from Norfolk, the final spirit came home from the World Vodka Awards with a Gold. It’s unfiltered, loaded with character and ridiculously smooth. We love it in a Moscow Mule.
