The Butler's Wine Show
Since 2019 we have been recording our own Butlers Podcast. It was my idea trying to do something no one else was really doing in the wine world at the time and it grew from there.
Our niece Evie does the intros and outros for us and Henry and I record them all on my iphone in one take.
We discuss wine trends, different regions or grape varieties, wine producing countries etc plus a few random things when I get distracted.
Butler had a lovely day on Wednesday this week. He was invited to taste English sparkling wines, in different glasses, from the world renowned Riedel glass makers, hosted by our friends at Ridgeview Vineyards. The point of the exercise was to nail down the stem ware, to try and find the most suitable glass for English sparkling wine. The same event was recently conducted in both Kent and Dorset, where statistics were gathered.
He had 12 different Riedel glasses in front of him, different sparkling wine glasses but also red and white wine glasses. Bottle number one was poured blind into all 12 glasses. The attendees tasted the wine and eliminated, with a show of hands, their three least favourite glasses. This was repeated with two more blind English sparklers, until the glasses were whittled down to the three group favourites.
Mr. Riedel was pleased, as the same three glasses were chosen in Sussex, Kent and Dorset. The tasting group then decided which was their favourite. The winner, by several votes, was also the winning glass in Kent and Dorset. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to reveal the name of the winning glass, but this was a fascinating exercise, and the winning glass doesn't look like a typical sparkling wine glass!
Glass shape, design and size are so important when drinking wine, this exercise highlighted how the smallest of changes can really make a difference to one's drinking/tasting experience.
