January - Our Favourite Low and No Alcohol Drinks

January - Our Favourite Low and No Alcohol Drinks

Whether you're committing bravely to a fully Dry January, or simply waking up with a New Year's Day hangover you don't feel like repeating any time soon, we have a lovely selection of alcohol free drinks and lower ABV wines to help you through the month.

Botivo Botanical Aperitivo (0%) 50cl - £28.50

A potently flavoured bittersweet 'liqueur' made from a base of barrel-aged apple cider vinegar, wildflower honey, wormwood, gentian, orange zest and a selection of herbs, Botivo really took us by surprise. Punchy yet balanced, with a complex flavour and refreshing finish, it is excellent served simply over with soda water over ice with a wedge of orange - or can be used as an alternative to alcoholic aperitivos to make low or no-alcohol versions of your favourite cocktails! And as you get 20 servings in a bottle, it stretches surprisingly far. Best of all, it is all made sustainably, certified by Slow Food UK and B Corp.

Wignac La Lady Squirrel Sans Alcool 330ml - £2.99Organic

Wignac produce cider from the ancient apple orchards of the Ardennes region of France, farming their apple trees organically as they work to preserve the dwindling pomiculture of the region. To make an alcohol-free alternative to their ciders, they specially select lower-sugar juice for light carbonation, to produce a refreshing drink with a more mature taste than more commercial sparkling apple juice. No added sugar, colours or sulphites either!

Flotzinger Alkoholfrei Hell 500ml (<0.5%) - £1.75

The oldest brewery in Rosenhaum, Bavaria, founded in 1543, Flotzinger have gained something of a cult status and reverence among fans of traditional helles lager. The very same excellent beer is brewed to full strength before careful de-alcoholisation to below 0.5%, retaining the delicate flavour of noble Hallertau hops and full-bodied Bavarian malt that give it's celebrated character.

And some lower ABV wine options:

Alasia Moscato d'Asti 2022 (5%) - £9.49

With fermentation stopped at just 5% by chilling and filtering the wine, Moscato d'Asti retains a lovely fruity sweetness and delicate fizz, making it a fantastic option for brunches or pairing with light and fruity desserts. Aromas of ripe peach, orange blossom and white grapes lead to a refreshing and balanced palate with a lingering fruity finish.

Beare Green Winery Pinot Noir Clone 777 2023 (10%) - £33.95

English wine is an excellent place to look for lower-alcohol options, especially if you are looking for a special bottle for an occasion. Beare Green are an exciting new producer, sourcing fruit from a number of small growers in Sussex and Surrey for their handcrafted minimal intervention wines. A selection of single clone Pinot Noir from a vineyard near Pulborough, with 50% of the wine matured in new and used French oak. Light in body but bursting with delicious fresh red fruits, rosehip and herbal aromas, with fine tannins and a long juicy finish.

Stopham Estate Pinot Gris 2023 (11%) - £22.50

Regularly awarded among the finest white wines in the UK at competitions, Stopham's Pinot Gris, grown on their estate vineyard in West Sussex is a deliciously balanced white that displays ample fruit and surprising richness for its low ABV. Aromas of passionfruit, anjou pear and cut grass lead into a gently rounded palate with moreish stone fruit and mango notes balanced by a clean and refined acidity.

Raza Vinho Verde 2023 (11.5%) - £12.99

A staff and customer favourite year after year, always delicious and refreshing! In contrast to the large volumes of mass-produced Vinho Verde on the market, Quinta da Raza is a family estate with a commitment to sustainable and high-quality production from vineyard to bottle. The result, a blend of Azal, Arinto and Trajadura, is a light white with subtle petillance and oodles of crisp green apple fruit alongside a hint of riper pineapple.

Ca de Maghi Canova Rosso NV (12%) - £16.50

The hills of Valpolicella around Verona are an excellent source of lower alcohol red wines (just steer clear of the Amarone!) and this lovely red from Ca de Maghi is a perfect example. Declassified from the appellation, it is the 'table wine' of the estate, a vibrantly fruity and silky blend of local varieties Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara. Pale ruby in colour, with fresh red cherry and strawberry fruit with a little twist of bitter chocolate on the finish adding a layer of interest.
