S.C. Pannell ‘Dead End’ McLaren Vale Tempranillo (£22.50£20.25)

Kicking us off is a dead-good red from an Aussie winemaker who haunted some of the very best cellars of Europe before returning home to ply his trade. Stephen Pannell is definitely one to watch, bringing a distinctly European vibe to his McLaren Vale wines.

Here he’s taken Tempranillo, which grows like a demon in the region’s sandy soils, slashed the oak influence and created a gorgeously perfumed, juicy wine packed with dark cherries, coffee and just a ghostly whisper of exotic spices. One very lively Dead End!

Skull X Platinum Vodka 70CL (£33£29.70)

The best vodkas are all about purity and that’s what shines through here. The water is sourced from natural aquifers 200 feet down and the white wheat used is Slovakia’s finest. And it’s made with the most consummate skull, sorry skill – distilled five times and filtered through platinum. The result is one hell of a friendly spirit!

It has very very subtle complexity (hints of creaminess, sweetness and spice) but there’s no burn at all. Sip it neat, add tonic or mix yourself a martini… and cackle wildly at having snagged yourself such a treat for under 30 quid.
