Champagne

First up, of course, is the fizz. We've got a whole world of grade-A sparklers but one of our longtime favourites chez Butler is Edouard Brun's voluptuous Réserve Premier Cru Champagne (£28.80 including discount).

It's mainly fuller-bodied Pinot Noir and the slightly higher dosage gives it a beautifully rich and rounded mouthfeel. It's definitely a treat, but if we only have quiet nights in at the moment, you may as well whip off your sensible hat, buy a bottle of this and make it an extra special one. 

The romantic red

There are so many reasons to treat your Valentine - or any loved one - to a bottle of Gran Passione Veneto Rosso(£12.50 after discount) 

Firstly this come form the home of Romeo and Juliet in Italy. For centuries the Veneto region of Italy, has been leading the way with modern winemaking. Gran Passione is a project which began, in homage to some of the great wines of this region. The Veneto is the only wine area in the world which seriously utilises dried grapes in their wine production.

If you're cooking steak for your Valentine's dinner, this wine will make it sing. 

Two hearts, two halves

Finally, if your thoughts are turning to a split-heart locket, stop right there! Here's something far less corny and more romantic: our tantalising pair of half-bottles (£16 including discount) - one red, one white, perfect for sharing over a meal or sending as a gift. 

The white is an organic wine that so many customers come back for once they've tried a bottle: Pieropan's Soave Classico 2019. It's zesty, peachy and floral with a fresh citrus finish that just goes on and on. 

The red is Dandelion Vineyards 'Lionheart of the Barossa' 2017 Shiraz, an incredibly generous, multi-layered wine from some of the Barossa Valley's most ancient vines.

Together they're as epic a couple as Bogie and Bacall.
